Pet Dander - the main cause for allergic reaction

Dander - Pets are very good companions and are helpful in providing people comfort and a sense of security. Keeping pets is common in many American households. Pets however, are also the major reason for allergies. Pets like cats and dogs have certain proteins present in their dander, saliva or urine which, when inhaled, can trigger an allergic reaction in a person.

Dander is skin flakes of animals like cats and dogs which contain microscopic allergens. These allergens become airborne in the air and because their stickiness they tend to cling on clothes and skin. When a person inhales an allergen, an allergic reaction starts which is normally coughing, sneezing and in some cases a running a nose.

People who have pets are more likely to get affected by the allergens present in pet dander. However, people who do not have pets at home can also acquire these allergens from people who have pets. Allergens can stick on clothing and if not removed properly can stick there for months. Thus, when a pet owner goes to a public place the allergen can easily be transmitted to a person not having a pet and can start the allergic reaction.

Cat allergies are the most common types of allergies found among people having pets because the allergens present in cat dander are transmitted very easily. People having cat allergies must wear gloves and masks when playing with their pet cats or they will end up sneezing and coughing while playing with their pet.

Dog allergies are more rarely found in people as compared to cat allergies. Like cat allergies, the allergens that cause dog allergies are present in the dander of dogs. When a dog scratches itself the allergens present in its skin flakes get introduced in to the air and can easily be inhaled by the pet owner. People who suffer from dog allergies must use air purifiers to keep their surrounding air free from allergens found in dogs.

One way of avoiding allergies from pets is to get rid of the pet itself. However, this is not always the best solution. Alternatively, a person can make use of anti-allergy medications to keep the allergens from affecting him while grooming a pet. Washing cats and dogs regularly can be useful in keeping the allergens from dispersing in the air regularly. Using anti –allergy sprays designed for pet allergens is also a very smart way of reducing the amount of allergens present in the air and lessening the chances of allergic reaction.
